About Sophia
Born in the medieval city of Vilnius, Lithuania, Sophia was raised between the Lower East side of New York City and Italy. Reznick was constantly exposed to many art forms from Europe’s earlier masters and classics to New York City’s Pop art and expressionism.
During Reznick’s college years at Copper Union, her artistic passion took hold as an expressionist painter. Taking a year’s sabbatical in Florence, Italy, where she was taught to render plaster casts and use a traditional palette, she discovered the world of portraiture. The art of Florence and the Uffizi gallery, coupled with the Studio Cecil Grav, she became more academically trained. Asked to sit for two classical painters in Florence, Jeffrey Mimms and Richard Maury, and she saw the amount of hard work required in painting… Upon her return to the US, Reznick began to fuse her earlier expressionist style with her newly discovered traditional work. The fusion of these two styles remains her passion in landscape and portraiture.
Mid career, Reznick devoted herself to fashion and charity, focusing on helping artists with medical, financial and housing support. She developed a flower broach which she drew inspiration from her grandmother, who survived WW2 as a milliner. Sophia then dedicated herself to raise money for the charity and was later on featured for the same designed flowers on the award winning show ‘Sex and the City’. Reznick’s flowers are now worn all over the world and have gained recognition through many prominent collectors including Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Lauren.
In 2004, Reznick was exposed to a new world of color and portraiture while she studied at The Cape School, going from a tonal palette to a full color impressionist palette. Reznick’s primary mediums are pastel, oil on canvas and watercolor. She has also taught at The Hawthorne School, primarily in oil and pastel and did the production and costume design on a short documentary about Charles Hawthorne, a renowned 19th Century portrait artist.
Sophia has dedicated her life to capturing the true essence, spirit and color of people and their surrounding environments. Pastel portraits from Life and photographs have become one of her refined mediums.
In recent years, Sophia has been working on commissioned portraits and landscapes in the Caribbean, Cape Cod, Nantucket and New York. In between her traveling artistic endeavors, she spends time studying in New York City with well-known American artists Nelson Shanks, whom she has posed for, as well as styled some of his models.
Sophia Reznick is multi-talented and dedicated to searching for artistic truth, reflecting the world’s beauty like a mirror, fueling her expression through her magical landscapes, angel-like portraits and fashion filled flowers.
